Tofu, Grilled

by Pierre S. Aoukar, MD
Posted: March 13

INGREDIENTS:

2 pounds firm or extra-firm tofu, (not silken)
2-3 cups marinade, either Spicy Garlic Sauce or Asian Dipping Sauce

DIRECTIONS:

1. For you marinade you can use either the spicy garlic sauce or the dipping sauce. If you are going to use the garlic sauce, I would recommend adding water (equal to one-third the amount of sauce you will be using) to the sauce since it is fairly thick. Drain the water in the container. Leave the tofu as a whole block. In a deep dish or the container it came it, add enough marinade to cover the tofu completely. You want to marinade this tofu overnight.

2. There are several ways to grill tofu. I’ve found best results using an open grill. Using a grill that cooks both sides at the same time yields variable results. Many times the tofu will lose its form completely from the weight of the top grill. To grill, place the block over low heat. Cover the grill if yours has one. Cook on both sides until there is a uniform golden brown and charred texture to the outside. Cooking time is at least ½ hour.

3. Cool at room temperature. Place in a tight plastic container until needed. Great in stir-fries, Asian salads, sandwiches or just by itself.
