Depression and Heart Attacks

by Hratch L Karamanoukian, MD and Pierre Aoukar, MD
Posted: February 24

In the journal Circulation, a well designed study was published which showed that people with heart disease who are depressed have an increased risk of death after a heart attack when compared to patients who are not depressed.

A recent study showed that almost 20 percent of heart attack victims fall into clinical depression. The study authors demonstrated that treatment with antidepressants can reduce the death rate in depressed patients who have suffered heart attacks.
